Mekong

MeKong
Churton Street
17/4/10
£35

I think I’m a bigger fan than Meaty because I often come for a solo take-away! This Vietnamese restaurant throws in some Thai and Chinese inspired dishes so there is something for everyone – the only problem is that you’re spoilt for choice. The Vietnamese chicken and prawn salad is fab but on this occasion I had the veggie spring rolls which come with lettuce and sweet chilli sauce. My fave dish on the menu is the fragrant aubergine – unfortunately it isn’t just the veggie that is fragrant because after all of that chilli and garlic I am a bit wiffy but it was worth it. Our friends rated the Vietnamese spring rolls and the spicy rice. We don’t normally do puds but on this occasion a communal fried banana dish got the thumbs up – think melted toffee apple but with banana. It was busy when we were there but we’d reserved a table upstairs. It doesn’t matter where you are the food is great and the only reason we spent this much is that Meaty had lashings of Vietnamese beer!

Lashings of beer, guilty. Of course that did not stop me from enjoying the double fried spicy chicken. And indeed there was a bit of garlic and chilli. On occasion I find that there is a bit much oil in the food, especially items like the spring rolls, but not this evening. It was also good to see it crowded. It’s a good restaurant and good food and for a while we thought it was struggling. What can you say about the banana? Sticky, sweet, chewy I am glad that there was only one on offer and there was help to consume it. Too sweet for me, but a good experience.
