Blue Jade

One of the few dishes we enjoy with mutual passion is tom yum hed – spicy mushroom soup. We’ve pigged our way around many thai restaurants and Blue Jade is a leading contender for making the soup of champions. Herbie enjoys the complimentary prawn crackers and regularly drops in to pick up a take away phad thai. On this occasion we followed the soup with veggie curry and beef in black bean sauce. Excellent! Blue Jade is quiet and friendly. They always do lovely Christmas decorations and in the summer we recommend a window table where you can watch a fine family of black cats who like to hang out in Cambridge Street. The only downside is that they close on Sundays (Blue Jade, not the cats). This is ok for an asian food loving pig because we can tell you about Mekong another time.

Completely agree on the tom yum hed. I think there are two varieties of the soup, one with tomato and one without. I prefer without. The Blue Jade makes them with, but even still, it’s one of the finest I have had. In fact, considering the miserable, cold, wet, grey and thoroughly winter we just had, it’s nice to walk by and get a take away tom yum hed. This time I also had beef with green beans in black bean sauce and steamed white rice. OK, the critique. The black bean sauce got a spot sweet towards the end, but then again I did not have all my rice. The staff is very friendly, sweet even and very attentive. This might be due to there only being 3 tables occupied, but again, we arrived early. MP
