Grumbles
35 Churton Street
28 march
Who would name a restaurant Grumbles? I don’t really care, its just lovely. Wood floors, some wood walls, great old photos and adverts for a friendly society and a cow that has earnings of cheese. We went for lunch on a Sunday. I can tell you this, we were not alone. A group of about 10 went downstairs and we could hear their laughter upstairs. There was a group of girls beside us, obviously meeting up as a regular group. There was a couple beside us from whom I learned where to get glasses that have a magnetic link between the two lenses on the nose piece. Oh, did I mention they played Nina Simone. Nothing is better on a Sunday than Nina. I had a smoked trout salad with tarragon sauce…mmmm. It was delightful. Then I had roast lamb shank which came with smashed spuds. Potatoes have a hard life to end up on my plate. I must say Carol makes better smashed potatoes. Yet, I ate them all. I was accused of leaving food on my plate…a bone and some rosemary. I think that’s OK and recommendation enough or Grumbels. They had a wine of the week; rioha/Grenache . It my capable hands it lasted an hour so I don’t know with they say a week.
MP
Grumbles has been a Pimlico institution since 1964 so they must be doing something right! The décor always makes me smile because it reminds me of my family kitchen in the 1970s but we took my parents and they didn’t have flashbacks so maybe this is just me. I normally go for the potted shrimps but this time we munched through the Sunday special menu so it was veggie pasta and apple crumble which we shared. I like the graffiti in the loos – a group of ladies to say that they were back from 1965 40 years on. It is that sort of place. The service is very brisk so you have to stop them otherwise they gallop off with the bread and olives when you aren’t looking. This is a fun place for people watching and comfort food eating.
