Loco Mexicano
Wilton Street
£40
This place is fun. They wear ponchos and sombreros but it’s not silly. I had the regular nachos to share with HP. The guac was a hit. It was not pureed and poured out of a jar, it seemed like it was made onsite and even had some crunch to it. The nachos were slightly flavoured and the melted cheese was really good. Then I went for a beef chimichanga. Unfortunately I thought the flavour was a bit lacking. The ingredients were good and the refried beans were perfect, it’s just, well, it was too mild for my liking. I asked for chilli sauce. What I should have asked for was salsa, and I am the wiser for it. What I got was Tabasco. Not ideal. I will go back, I just think I did not get their best.

We both have a soft spot for Mexican food – happy memories of going for nachos for lunch at Café Pacifico near Meaty’s des res in Cov Garden. So when Meaty ordered nachos to share it was a tough act to follow but Loco Mexicano shoots and scores. Next was veggie burrito for me was great - so big that I didn’t think I could ever eat again (I say this a lot!) This place looks like a temple to 1970s naffness but it always has a good atmosphere and lots of happy hours so it would be good to bring a posse and hit the cocktails. Meaty was on the beers on this occasion but has previously given the margaritas the thumbs up. Don’t let the brown and orangeness put you off this is a good night out. HP
